A USB modem provides you with dial-up capabilities so you can use a phone line to connect to the Internet. You must set up the dial-up connection to use the USB modem. Each Internet Service Provider (ISP) has its own number where you dial up and connect to the service's servers. This is beneficial if you want to set up a backup Internet connection, or if you only have dial-up service available in your area.

Once the modem is online, connect a laptop or computer to the modem using an Ethernet cable. You may also connect via WiFi if the modem is capable.

Connect your USB modem to a USB port on your computer. Windows automatically detects the modem and installs drivers for you. After the drivers install, click the Windows 'Start' button, 'Control Panel' and then click 'Network and Internet.' Click the 'Connect' button. The USB modem dials your ISP's number and connects to the servers. Click the 'Browse the Internet now' button to open your default Web browser. Type a website into the Web browser address text box and press 'Enter.' The USB modem is used to access and open the website.
